  1. GEOSYNCHRONOUS ORBIT

  3. A satellite orbit of 35,880 km above the equator. A satellite travelling along this orbit from west to east appears 
  4. stationary to an observer on Earth. Geosynchronous orbits are used mainly by communications satellites.

  6. Nearly all satellites transmitting television programs operate on geosynchronous orbits, acting as immensely tall relay 
  7. stations. Some scientific satellites are also placed on geosynchronous orbits so that they can maintain a non-stop 
  8. contact with just one ground station. One of these is the IUE. It studies stars, especially on infrared wavelengths.
